Bless A Usb For Legacy Boot

New Windows 10 computers use UEFI firmware instead of the traditional BIOS. As you probably noticed when using a MBR-partitioned Windows installation USB drive on a new Windows 10 PC, UEFI will not recognize it as a boot media. UEFI-based computer can only boot from GPT-partitioned USB drive. Luckily, for backward compatibility most of the UEFI systems can also be configured to disable UEFI secure boot and instead revert to legacy BIOS boot mode. In this tutorial we’ll explain how you can easily create a UEFI or legacy bootable USB drive for Windows 10 Setup.

How to Create UEFI or Legacy Bootable USB Drive for Windows 10 Setup

If you have the Windows 10 ISO image on your PC, you can choose to make a Windows 10 bootable USB drive with UEFI or legacy bootloader. 64-bit UEFI PC can only boot 64-bit version of Windows 10, while 32-bit UEFI PC can boot 32-bit OS only. So if you want to install Windows 10 with UEFI mode, you have to download a correct version of Windows 10 ISO image.

  • Select the Advanced tab, and then select Boot Options. Under Legacy Boot Order, select a boot device, and then press Enter. • Once we have our bootable USB drive, we are good to go. But not so fast. The booting process of a PC is managed by two motherboard firmware. We currently have the Legacy BIOS mode, the UEFI boot mode, and the Legacy+UEFI compatibility mode. Let’s take a look at both UEFI and Legacy BIOS modes. Legacy BIOS boot mode.

Before get started, make sure you backup all important files stored in your USB drive. The process of creating a bootable USB drive will erase all data and re-partition your USB drive.

  1. Insert the USB drive into the USB port of your computer.
  2. Launch the ISO2Disc program. Click on Browse to select the Windows 10 ISO file.
  3. Now you have two options: make a bootable CD or USB drive. We’re explaining how to create a Windows 10 USB installer, so click on “Burn to USB Flash Drive” and select the drive letter of your USB disk from the list.
  4. Choose the partition style that is suitable for your target computer. If you want to install Windows 10 in UEFI mode on UEFI-based PC, choose the “GPT (required for UEFI boot)” option.

Otherwise choose “MBR (for legacy BIOS / CSM boot)” for BIOS-based PC, or UEFI computer running in legacy BIOS/CSM mode.

  5. Click on Start Burn. It will now create a Windows 10 USB installer. After creating, you’ll find out that a UEFI bootable USB drive was formatted as FAT32 because NTFS is not supported for external boot media under UEFI.

I followed your directions exactly and installed Clover on both a USB stick and an internal Fat32 formatted drives. Each time, your Legacy installer confirmed a successful installation. However I was never able to boot from either drive into Clover, no matter what I tried in settings. From the firmware menus, boot to drive or network while in UEFI or BIOS mode: On the boot device menu, select the command that identifies both the firmware mode and the device. For example, select UEFI: USB Drive or BIOS: Network/LAN. You might see separate commands for the same device. For example, you might see UEFI USB Drive and BIOS USB.

Of course, there are also some other USB creation tools available on the net, such as Rufus. It also allows you to create UEFI or legacy bootable USB installation drive from Windows 10 ISO image.

GPT is modern and has many advantages over MBR. However, there are also some issues with GPT booting in Legacy BIOS mode. GPT is part of the EFI specification, of course it will work best in UEFI mode. But maybe it will not be compatible and can not boot up on the BIOS computer, see more here. Microsoft also does not support booting Windows on a GPT hard disk in Legacy BIOS mode. However, in some ways, you can still install Windows on a GPT hard drive even if your computer only supports Legacy BIOS mode.

So far, MBR is still supported in both UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot. However, there are several reasons that you must use GPT instead of MBR. You can only create partitions up to 2TB on MBR disks, if you need to create partitions larger than 2TB or the total size of partitions on disks larger than 4TB, use GPT instead of MBR. For 3TB and 4TB hard drives, you can create multiple partitions with full disk space without having to convert the MBR to GPT, see how to partition a 4TB hard drive.

AIO Boot now supports installing Grub2 on GPT disks including both HDD and USB. After installing Grub2, you can boot the GPT disk in Legacy BIOS mode.

Windows Boot Manager does not support booting into Legacy BIOS mode on GPT disks. AIO Boot uses wimboot to do this.

Install Grub2 with the boot partition

  1. Install AIO Boot to a partition on GPT disks.
  2. The grub-install, grub-bios-setup command on Linux and the grub-install.exe, grub-bios-setup.exe program on Windows require a boot partition on the GPT disk to install Grub2 for the Legacy BIOS mode. On Linux, this partition will be flagged as bios_grub. We will create a small partition of 1 to 10MB. You do not need to format and do not need to mount the drive letter for this partition. For USB, you can use the MiniTool Partition Wizard to create a second partition.
  3. Run AIOCreator.exe, select Grub2 from Bootloaders. The tool will list the partitions that you created in step 2.
  4. Select the partition and click OK to install Grub2.

Install Grub2 without a boot partition

This is a new feature of AIO Boot v0.9.8.1. It supports installing Grub2 on the GPT hard disk to boot in Legacy BIOS mode without creating a boot partition.

  2. Run AIOCreator.exe.
  3. Select Install Grub2 (Legacy) from the Tools button. This button only appears when the current hard disk is GPT and the current drive format is FAT32 or NTFS.
  4. Please note that you should reinstall Grub2 every time you defragment on this drive.
